The Retail Challenge
In China’s beverage market, a cooler is actually a point of sale and a marketing surface in store operations.
T.C. Pharma Red Bull has strong brand recognition in China, though, its cooler program started later than some competitors. As a newer entrant in this space, the team wanted smarter management to improve product placement, gain inventory visibility, and support operational decisions with data.
Standard coolers do not produce real-time data. That created 3 problems:
- Brand purity
Planogram compliance is a core operational metric. Field staff had to visit stores, take photos, and upload them by hand. This raised labor costs and still left sales and stock levels unclear. - Asset security
Coolers are brand assets, and units often went missing in the field. Manual store visits could log a missing cooler but not locate it, leading to direct asset loss. - Machine status
Brand owners had no view of temperature, humidity, or energy use. When a store lost power and a cooler stopped cooling or lighting up, customer experience and brand image both suffered.
T.C. Pharma Red Bull partnered with VendSolution to bring real-time data and operational visibility to its retail network.

Red Bull has an unusual history in China. More than one company sells Red Bull products in this market today. We and our partner T.C. Pharma were among the first to introduce Red Bull to China and build a national distribution network in the early years.
What VendSolution Built?
The system centers on monitoring and data collection. Hardware and software work together to support daily operations.
- Purity monitoring: AI cameras capture product layouts. The system tracks Red Bull facing share against competing products to keep merchandising standards consistent.

- Operations support: A web dashboard and a mobile field-service app let the team manage 6,000+ coolers, check status in real time, and respond quickly to issues.
- Live status: Each cooler reports its connection, temperature, and compressor activity. This helps prevent unauthorized shutdowns and asset loss.
- Geofencing: The smart cooler is equipped with geofencing and GPS tracking. It automatically reports its location at regular intervals. If the machine moves beyond a predefined range (for example, 200 meters), an alert is immediately pushed to both the backend system and the operator’s mobile app.
- At the same time, the system can remotely lock the machine, preventing normal operation in the event of theft. This helps effectively protect the brand owner’s assets.
Adding cameras raised the per-unit cost, which prompted internal discussion about return on investment. Monthly performance reports and detailed data made it possible to find the right balance between spend and outcome.
These capabilities help T.C. Pharma Red Bull acts on accurate data, runs stores more efficiently, and prepares for future upgrades.
Results
After deployment, T.C. Pharma Red Bull saw:
- 6,000+ coolers managed across major Chinese markets;

- Faster, more reliable sales data collection;
- Quicker response to operational issues;
- Brand visibility and the customer shopping experience have both been enhanced.
The rollout improved daily operations and set a foundation for the next phase.
What’s Next
As AI coolers reach more locations, the partnership continues to grow. The next stage adds vision-based coolers that capture pick-up data at the SKU level. This will support new product launch analysis and promotion planning. Reporting tools and platform features will continue to evolve, making analysis faster and decisions clearer.
